My first time in Asia and at the same time, the first big backpacking trip.
Our route:
• Singapore
• Kuala Lumpur and the Cameron Highlands
• Kuala Sengalor
• Yogyakarta
• Borobodur
• Prambanan
• Cemoro Lawang with a hike to Mount Penanjakan and the famous volcano Bromo
• Mount Ijen
• Bali
• Gili Islands
We started of in Singapore, the by far cleanest city I've ever visited. The city is quite artifical, but has developed its own charme somehow.
We had some really great food there and it was a perfect start into our vacation.
Next stop was Malaysia. We spent a couple of days in Kuala Lumpur, an amazing big but very green city. I've always wanted to see the petronas towers. We spent some day trips while we stayed in the city. First trip to the Cameron Highlands where we got to know a lot about tea and visited the tea fields and farms.
The second trip we drove to Kuala Sengalore. Don't touch the monkey they said. Well, but they basically jumped us.
With a super small plane we landed in Yogyakarta. The city itself presented a lot of street art. We ate a lot of jackfruit and visited the water palast.
Our day trips to Borobodur and Prambanan were a MUST. The ancient tempels with the hundres of buddha statues were amazing to see.
The the adventurous part of our trip started.
By train we went to Cemoro Lawang. Well, or at least how far we got, then we had to take a taxi up to the village. The village is super small, we stayed in the most fucked up hostel ever, did not sleep at all and started our hike when it was still complete darkness out there.
The hike was not really tough, but the path was almost invisble. We hiked up to Mount Penanjakan. Everybody else goes up there with a jeep, but honestly, we wanted to escape these tourist masses.
The sunrise in direction of the Bromo was one of my highlights, if not THE highlight on this trip.
While all the other tourists rushed down with the jeeps and walked to Bromo itself we enjoyed a calm hike down and once we arrived at Bromo we had it all to ourself, only one other couple was there at this moment.
Next day our trip continued to a village near Mount Ijen. We hiked up in the early morning hours as well. The goal was to be on top before the sun rises, in complete darkness to see the blue flames. This volcano is not active any more. The intense blue flames are caused by sulfuric gases in the crater at temperatures up to 600 °C. You can see there the workers there, who really schocked us. They are local miners from the surrounding region who extract raw sulfur from the crater, working in extreme temperatures, toxic fumes, and it's a really physically demanding work.
Our next stop was in Bali. The relaxing part of the trip started.
We did not see all of Bali but stayed in Ubud, as we only spent a few days and did not want to just drive around.
Ubud however is amazing. It has a lot to offer, rice fields, amazing food, wildlife, etc. Everything you could imagine in a picture perfect holiday location.
The Gili Islands were different though. There are no cars on these islands, which is refreshing.
We spent the majority of our time there diving. In the afternoon we often borrowed some bikes and circled around the main island.
the dives were absolutely stunning. Next to giant turtles we saw colorful reefs. My favorite dive was a night-dive. Towards the end of the dive we met at 5m, waved around our torches wildly and then at the same time turned them off. So we could see the flourescending plankton. I felt like millions of stars were surrounding me. It was an absolutely amazing experience.
